I took these photographs between the early 1990s and the beginning of the digital era, across Asia, the Middle East and beyond. Most were shot on film, long before smartphones, social media and the constant documentation of everyday life.

At the time, I wasn't building an archive. I was simply travelling, working and taking photographs out of curiosity. Only with distance has it become clear that many of these images document places and ways of life that have since changed beyond recognition.

The value of an archive is often accidental. A photograph made for one reason can, years later, tell a very different story.

This photograph, shot in Kolkata (then Calcutta) in 1996, captures a city in transition. The iconic Ambassador taxis that once dominated India's streets have largely disappeared, while smoking on public transport has long since become a thing of the past.
